Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Men's Prime Event
Stop No. 5 of 5 on the 2014 ASP Europe Qualifying Series
Location: | Mobile, Cascais / Portugal |
Holding period: | 7 - 11 October 2014 |
Call: | Next Call - 9:00 a.m. (WEST) Thursday at Guincho |
Conditions: | 5-to-8-foot |
PRAIA DE GUINCHO, Cascais - Portugal (Wednesday, October 8, 2014) - The ASP Prime Cascais Billabong Pro, resumed this morning in a building swell to culminate in double-overhead sets at Guincho and whittle the field down to 24 hopefuls.
A pivotal moment in the 2014 Qualifying Series race, this event will play a major role in the campaigns of some of the World’s Best surfers to either obtain their ticket for the Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour or maintain their position one more season.
Adriano De Souza (BRA) 27, current World No.8 and one of the highest ranked WCT competitors to advance today, displayed his versatility when he dismantled a long right, earning the day’s highest single-wave score of a 9.50 out of 10. The talented Brazilian, paved the way in the first heat of Round 2 for all competitors to step up their game as the event moved into a new phase.
“At this stage right now in the prime, coming to the end of the year, everyone is needing points and really frothing to stay on tour next year,” De Souza said. “I’m surfing relaxed, getting off that pressure from the WCT and this event for me is a good opportunity to surf and have fun. The waves have been giant down here, but every time I go out I’ve gotten lucky to find good waves and hopefully I continue to the end of the event.”
Italo Ferreira (BRA) 19, marched right through the very following heat, inspired by De Souza’s performance, and notched the day’s highest heat total, an impressive 17.53 out of possible 20. A fifth placer in the previous Prime event in Azores, Ferreira currently sitting in 22nd on the QS ranks will look to advance into the latter rounds of the Cascais Billabong Pro for a chance to crack the Top10.
“The waves are really big and it’s hard out there, but my board is amazing and I’m super stoked to make my heat,” Italo Ferreira confirmed.
Adam Melling (AUS) 29, defending Portuguese Waves Series - Cascais Trophy champion, continued his prolific campaign at Guincho, perfectly exploiting the big and critical sections with his signature power carves.
“I had a good run here last year, it started over in the Azores and finished up in Cascais. It all just came together for me, luck went my way, and that seems to be happening out here as well.” Adam Melling reflected. “I’m backing it up here on the QS, which I’m really happy about as it gives you that little roll on to the next event and gives you some confidence.”
Brett Simpson (USA) 29, waited for most of his 30-minute bout to get active in the lineup but eventually caught a big, throaty barrel to collect an 8.10. With only minutes on the clock, the talented Californian managed to find a little corner on his backhand this time, to perform two hacks and notch the day’s buzzer beater over fellow WCT competitor C.J Hobgood (USA).
“I was definitely having a rough go out there, there’s a lot of water moving and I was going back and forth,” Simpson said. “The other guys got some quick scores, so I was behind the ball and with that wave I just tried to pull my inner John John (Florence) out. I gave it a go, and I needed something to change my momentum as I was definitely not having a good one until I was able to get that wave that put me right back in it.”
France’s Marc Lacomare (FRA) 24, produced the day’s upset in eliminating local hero Tiago Pires (PRT) in the second round. The powerful goofy-footer who was on the verge of qualifying in 2013 has had a difficult campaign so far this season and looked revitalized in the heavy conditions at Guincho.
“Its crazy out there, it’s way more powerful than what it looks like from the beach,” Lacomare explained. “It’s all over the place with huge closeouts which makes it hard to paddle back out, and it’s hard to find any open waves. After I got that left I knew it was going to be a score, so I did a little claim. I’m just doing my best and see what happens.”
The WCT field continued to slim down today at Guincho with the losses of Filipe Toledo (BRA), Aritz Aranburu (ESP), Tiago Pires (PRT) and Bede Durbidge (AUS) amongst others.
Event officials have invited everyone to check back tomorrow at 9:00am (local time WEST) at the backup venue of Guincho for a potential third day of action. Up first in the water when the event resumes will be Adriano De Souza (BRA), Jose Ferreira (PRT) and Wigolly Dantas (BRA).
The ASP Prime Cascais Billabong Pro is scheduled from October 7-11, 2014 in Cascais, Portugal. For all results, photos, video highlights, press releases and LIVE webcast, log on to aspworldtour.com.

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Men's Prime Event
Stop No. 5 of 5 on the 2014 ASP Europe Qualifying Series
Location: | Mobile, Cascais / Portugal |
Holding period: | 7 - 11 October 2014 |
Call: | Next Call - 7:30 a.m. (WEST) Wednesday |
Conditions: | 4-to-6-foot |
PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais - Portugal (Tuesday, October 7, 2014) - The ASP Prime Cascais Billabong Pro launched today in chunky 4-to-6-foot surf at the backup venue of Guincho. The opening day delivered intense action and huge upsets at the hands of the best up-and-coming surfers on the QS tour. The misty morning conditions quickly let way to a beautiful day of competition in pumping surf.
Stop No. 5 of 8 on the ASP Prime Series, the event will decide the 2014 European Champion as well as play a crucial role in the hunt for a coveted spot on the Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour in 2015.
Hawaiian powerhouse Fredrick Patacchia (HAW) 32, came firing out of the gates, scoring a near-perfect 9.80 out of 10 for three consecutive big turns in the critical sections of a massive set wave. His fronthand vertical attack was second to none and rewarded by the judges panel accordingly.
“I thought I’d might be making a bad decision going for that wave, but it could also be really good so I took a chance,” Patacchia reflected. “It felt like I was way too far out, but I knew the tide was dropping and I saw a couple of bombs coming in. It’s really difficult out there and you really have to pick your spot. The first turn felt good, second one came out alright and I knew I needed to finish it, and man, when I did, I was really stoked.”
World No.18 Filipe Toledo (BRA) 19, got the Portuguese crowds fired up with a glimpse of his aerial repertoire when he launched into a massive double-rotation, only just coming short of landing it for the history books. Toledo was one of the very few Top34 members to advance comfortably into the second round.
“The wind helped me on that wave to get more time in the air. The wind is amazing and the waves are big so you can push yourself to go higher.” Filipe Toledo commented. “It’s good to be back in Portugal, I enjoy the prime and I’m getting ready for the next WCT event in Peniche. I’m really confident and my boards are working really good. I hope to get a good result here and another one in Peniche, because I missed out on Azores so I need to do well in these last two contests here in Portugal for a chance at the Cascais Trophy and the $50,000 cash prize.”
European tour veteran Jonathan Gonzalez (CNY) 34, was responsible for the biggest upsets of all in Heat 12, taking out three-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS). The talented Canarian capitalized on wave-selection and four-man-heat tactics to edge out Fanning and advance alongside Conner Coffin (USA).
“My confidence going into the next heat tomorrow will be the same as today, just focus on one, two good waves,” explained Gonzalez. “The conditions are really hard right now, so you have to be a little bit lucky to get a good potential wave, and that was my focus in front of this heat and that worked out well. At the end of the heat I was super stoked, but there is still so much work to be done to get a good result here so I’m just focusing on the next round.”
The QS alliance made of Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz (CRI) 21, and Joan Duru (FRA) 25, eliminated another top seed in Taj Burrow (AUS) in Heat 13 to start their Cascais campaign and reduce the WCT field drastically.
“I haven’t had a good result all year, but I’m looking for it and I’m feeling very confident,” Munoz said. “I’ve been working on my surfing and tried different boards so I’m super happy to make my heat. I had Taj in my heat which made me really go for it and I got two good waves. It’s the end of the year, only four more events so doing good here really helps me to get more confidence.”
Italian phenom Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) 16, secured his ticket for Round 2 of the Cascais Billabong Pro, eliminating world No.16 Adrian Buchan (AUS) in the process. Fioravanti also got his revenge on Tanner Gudauskas (USA) who defeated him in the final in Lacanau earlier this summer.
“There’s definitely a chance for me to get on the WCT, the train might only come by once, so I just have to try and get on it. I’m just going to give it my all. I might not feel 100% ready to take on the big boys, but that’s all an experience. I’m just having fun, adding no pressure, just surfing heats and trying to make smart decisions and that has been paying off so I’m stoked.”
The 2013 ASP European Junior Champion, now in second place on the European QS rankings, is looking for another strong result in Cascais to upgrade his title this season.
Defending event champion Jadson Andre (BRA) 24, fresh off a runner-up finish at the Quiksilver Pro France, survived a tricky Round 1 bout, placing second to Brazilian compatriot Wigolly Dantas (BRA), and keeping his hopes of back-to-back titles alive.
“It definitely was a really challenging heat for me,” Andre admitted. “I just only arrived from France around midnight last night and haven’t had much sleep these last couple of days. I was really just hoping to make my heat somehow and now I can go and rest, and hopefully come back tomorrow at my 100%.”
Sitting in an awkward 20th position on the WCT rankings post France, Andre has been however performing in the Prime events and solidifying his spot in the Top10 to stay amongst the Top34 next season.
“Since the beginning of the year I’ve been training so hard and my surfing felt good,” Andre continued. “But unfortunately I’ve had to surf against the Top5 guys every single time in the third round and I couldn’t go past. Last week I made it in France and got second so my confidence levels are definitely up there right now.”
Surfers and event officials will reconvene Wednesday at 7:30am (local WEST) at the backup venue of Guincho for a potential early start to the remaining heats of the opening round.

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Men's Prime Event
Stop No. 5 of 5 on the 2014 ASP Europe Qualifying Series
Location: | Mobile, Cascais / Portugal |
Holding period: | 7 - 11 October 2014 |
Call: | First Call - 7:15 a.m. (WEST) Tuesday at Guincho |
Conditions: | 5-to-7-foot |
PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais - Portugal (Monday, October 6, 2014) - On October 7, the ASP Prime Cascais Billabong Pro will return to the iconic Carcavelos stretch of beach and welcome some of the World’s Best surfers including numerous big names from the Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour.
This second edition in Cascais will conclude an exciting 2014 European Qualifying Series season and award the prestigious regional champion trophy, as well as play a crucial role in the Portuguese Waves Series - Cascais Trophy title race. Following the first event of the series in Azores last month, surfers in the top ranks will be eager to perform in Cascais for a chance to notch the extra $50k prizepurse awarded to the overall winner after the Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
Leading the immense talent pool coming to battle in Cascais will be current World No.3 Mick Fanning (AUS), who has already collected two event wins this season at the elite level and is still in contention for a potential third World Title.
"I’ve always enjoyed the European leg and Portugal has been a great addition to the ASP World Championship Tour,” Fanning said. “Taking part in the event at Cascais gives me the opportunity to explore more of the coastline and test myself against the super talented surfers on the Word Qualifying Series. Hoping to score waves and a win!”
The swell consistency on the Portuguese coast this time of year and the ability to select two different locations promise a week of intense world class action between Carcavelos and Guincho. Alongside the numerous Portuguese surf fans, event organizers are looking forward to the start of an epic week of surfing.
"We want to make this one of the best prime events in ASP history,” Frederico Texeira, event manager stated. "Hopefully the swell and conditions provide a perfect platform for the majority of the Worlds best surfers to perform here at the Cascais Billabong Pro. We are building the Portuguese Wave Series - Cascais Trophy to showcase the variety of world class waves here in Portugal.”
The first call has been set to 7:15am Tuesday, for a potential early start of Round 1 at the backup venue of Guincho.
