SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Friday, October 10, 2014) - The Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal, Event No. 10 of 11 on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour, will converge the world’s best surfers onto the sand-bottom barrels of Peniche’s Supertubos this coming week with an historic world title hanging in the balance.
Gabriel Medina (BRA), 20, currently leads this world’s best surfers on the 2014 ASP World Championship Tour rankings, and is poised to make history as the first Brazilian title holder this coming week in Portugal. If achieved, Medina’s title clinching will mark the first time a 20-year-old has done so since 11-time ASP World Champion and international sporting icon Kelly Slater (USA), 42, achieved this in 1992.
Standing in the way are six surfers with a mathematical chance of claiming this year’s world surfing crown: Kelly Slater (USA), Mick Fanning (AUS), Joel Parkinson (AUS), John John Florence (HAW), Taj Burrow (AUS) and Michel Bourez (PYF). Both Burrow and Bourez would have to win the remaining two events (Portugal and Pipeline) with Medina finishing 13th or worse to have a chance at the title.
The following scenarios breakdown the remaining possibilities for Medina to clinch the 2014 ASP World Title at the upcoming Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal:
If Medina wins the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, he will clinch the 2014 ASP World Title.
If Medina finishes Runner-Up at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, Slater will need to win the event to send the title race to Pipeline.
If Medina finishes 3rd at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, Fanning or Slater will need to win the event to send the title race to Pipeline.
If Medina finishes 5th at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, Fanning will need to win the event and/or Slater will need to finish Runner-Up or better to send the title race to Pipeline.
If Medina finishes 9th at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, Florence or Parkinson will need to win the event, Fanning will need a Runner-Up or better and/or Slater will need a 3rd or better to send the title race to Pipeline.
If Medina finishes 13th or 25th at Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the title race will go to Pipeline.
The Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal will run from October 12 - 23, 2014 and will be webcast LIVE at ASPWorldTour.com

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Men's Prime Event
Stop No. 5 of 5 on the 2014 ASP Europe Qualifying Series
Location: | Mobile, Cascais / Portugal |
Holding period: | 7 - 11 October 2014 |
Call: | Final Call - 7:30 a.m. (WEST) Saturday |
Conditions: | 3-to-5-foot |
PRAIA DE GUINCHO, Cascais - Portugal (Friday, October 10, 2014) - The Cascais Billabong Pro resumed at 8am in decreasing 3-to-5-foot waves at Guincho and completed two rounds of competition to decide the quarterfinalists.
The final Qualifying event in Europe for 2014, and Stop No.2 of 3 in the Portuguese Waves Series - Cascais trophy, this event brings some of the World’s Best surfers to the pristine Cascais coastline in the hunt for crucial ranking points and a shot at the extra $50k to the winner of the series.
Julian Wilson (AUS) 25, who navigated the early rounds with three consecutive second places, started to reveal his true self today and built momentum with a first win in the morning against Ryan Callinan (AUS).
“In that heat I still feel there was a plenty of room to improve,” Wilson said.”But that was definitely a better heat for myself and one of the better heats I've had in a little while. It’s playful out there, maybe the tide was a little bit too high towards the end but it was fun.”
Later on, Wilson lit up the beach at Guincho with a huge air right in the opening minutes of his man-on-man matchup against fellow Top34 Nat Young (USA) for the highest score of the day, an excellent 9.30 out of 10. Wilson went on to backup his position with solid surfing on his backhand to put his opponent in a combination situation and seal the deal.
“I wanted to come out of the gate with something that would have an impact on the heat, and I pulled it off,” Wilson continued. “That was the first heat where I've had any sort of a lead in the first half of the heat, so it was great to get a good start.”
Carlos Munoz (CRI) 21, had long time WCT competitor Jeremy Flores (FRA) 26, against the ropes in their Round 5 matchup with only seconds on the clock. Under pressure, the talented French surfer from New Caledonia waited patiently with priority to select his last effort and collect the winning ride on the buzzer.
“It’s a lot smaller today and the waves are fatter, I’m riding the same board as yesterday, and I didn't realise how weak it was all of a sudden.” Flores explained. “Yesterday was so powerful, so today I couldn't really hit my turns like I wanted to. On my first waves I knew I wasn't getting high enough scores, so I was waiting for a bigger one, cause I knew if I could make a couple of good turns on a big wave, they would have to score it.”
In a critical position on the Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour, Flores is in need a big result to ensure he stays amongst the Top34 in 2015.
“Carlos is a hard man to beat, he rips,” Flores continued. “So that was a good heat for me. I am super stoked, I think this is the best result I’ve had all year.”
Guincho local and event wildcard Jose Ferreira (PRT) 22, had an incredible run in this event but couldn’t unfortunately keep his momentum up in round 5, opposed to a lethal Wigolly Dantas (BRA) 24.
“It was really frustrating that last heat, I couldn’t catch anything and was completely lost out there,” Ferreira said. “My goal for this year was to crack the Top100 and compete in all the primes, and I just did with this result so I’m pretty happy.”
Despite his shocker round 5 matchup, Ferreira displayed a lot of maturity all-event and matched some of the world’s best surfers blast for blast to reach his best result ever. The last remaining Portuguese surfer in the event, Ferreira had the crowds and whole contest site supporting him at Guincho.
“It was an honor to compete against the CT guys, and when I started beating a couple of them I was just so happy,” Ferreira continued. “My house is just 5 minutes away from here and this beach is my home. It was amazing to have my friends, family and sponsors supporting me here.”
Current World No. 7 Michel Bourez (PYF) 28, rounded up the day’s action when he dispatched of France’s Vincent Duvignac (FRA) 26 in a very slow heat, to advance into the quarterfinals where he’ll be facing Julian Wilson.
“My plan was to stay away from Vincent and get two good scores, and then paddle towards him and try to block him.” Bourez said. “I’ve got no game plan for tomorrow’s heat yet, I will have to wait and see what the conditions will be like. In surfing, and especially here in Europe the tide is changing so much, so it doesn't matter if you are from here or not. What matters more is how you adapt to the conditions, and then find a plan B quickly if plan A doesn't work out.”
The final call of the ASP Prime Cascais Billabong Pro will be held at Guincho at 7:30am (local WEST) Saturday. Up first when the event recommences will be Wigolly Dantas (BRA) against Italo Ferreira (BRA) in quarterfinal No.1.

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Men's Prime Event
Stop No. 5 of 5 on the 2014 ASP Europe Qualifying Series
Location: | Mobile, Cascais / Portugal |
Holding period: | 7 - 11 October 2014 |
Call: | Next Call - 7:30 a.m. (WEST) Friday |
Conditions: | 5-to-8-foot |
PRAIA DE GUINCHO, Cascais - Portugal (Thursday, October 9, 2014) - The ASP Prime Cascais Billabong Pro, resumed around lunchtime to complete eight heats in pumping 5-to-8-foot surf at Guincho. The remaining members of the elite Top 34 in contention in Cascais put on a dominant performance to secure most of the coveted spots in the Round of 16.
Stop No. 5 of 5 on the European Qualifying Series, this event is extremely important in both the regional title race and the WCT qualifying campaigns of the World’s Best. It will also help determine the winner of the Portuguese Waves Series - Cascais Trophy.
Vincent Duvignac (FRA) 26, and Michel Bourez (PYF) 28, put on an incredible show in the final heat of the day, navigating brilliant barrels to round up the no-loser round. Bourez, on his forehand, put on the brakes to slot himself into a standup barrel and concluded the ride with a powerful re-entry for a near-perfect 9.87. Duvignac answered on his backhand, racing through a speedy barrel for a clean exit and a long roundhouse cutback that was rewarded a 9.57 by the judges panel. Duvignac eventually managed to find a stronger backup on another lefthander and took the win.
“It was a special heat, Michel (Bourez) is one of my favourites and when I saw that his wave was barrelling I knew he was getting a good score, so I thought now I have to go big or go home,” Duvignac stated. “I didn't get any good waves for the first fifteen minutes and then I got this crazy left, I pulled in and got a sick barrel so I was super stoked when I came out.”
World No.9 Jordy Smith (ZAF) 26, one of the most powerful surfers on tour, demonstrated his talent on a large righthander with a combination of critical turns. Ponctuating the ride with a huge layback and almost losing control coming down the face of a double-overhead set, Smith stayed strong on his feet to collect a 9.40 and moved on directly to the Round of 16.
“Its pretty tough out there and there’s a lot of water moving,” Smith said. “There is so much power out there that if you place the board in the right place you can find yourself getting some big sections and big scores. I chose a round tail for this heat, like I said, there is so much power that when the sections do arise you can really push it and give it a good jam.”
With a solid lead over C.J Hobgood (USA) and Davey Cathels (AUS), Smith kept building momentum and caught another great wave, on his backhand this time. Three solid turns and a ton of spray later, Smith added another excellent score to bump his heat total up to 18.07 out of 20, the highest of the event so far.
“I came here cause I had never been to Cascais and I’ve always heard it’s a beautiful place. There’s a lot of swell here and I thought, why not come down and have a little headstart before Peniche.” Smith continued. “It’s another way for me to stay in form and maintain my focus. It’s a lot of work out there, there’s a lot of paddling, just before my heat started I spent probably 8 or 9 minutes just trying to get out. It’s a lot of energy and I’d rather save it for the later days, but you know when you get those good waves it’s all worth it.”
Wigolly Dantas (BRA) 24, battled his way into a round 5 berth, opposed to an in-form local hero Jose Ferreira (PRT). Dantas picked up a set wave to launch into a massive frontside turn, carved his way into the power section and finished with a daring blast on the closeout. With a 9.33 under his belt, the Brazilian was however never safe in the lead, and Ferreira took advantage of a couple of similar waves to post two good scores and steal the lead. In the final moments of the exchange, Dantas picked up another big lefthander to perform two smooth carving turns and notch the winning score.
“I thought that if I made it on my first turn it was going to be good,” Dantas said. “I knew I would have to go big to win, and the wave almost closed on me so I made another turn and came out safe. The white water out there is pretty crazy and I got a couple of waves on my head.”
Brett Simpson (USA) 29, seemed in control of Heat 3 up until the defending event champion Jadson Andre (BRA) 24, started on a long and fast left on his forehand. Andre, fresh off an excellent second place in France and brimming with confidence, unloaded three crisp power carves to net an 8.33 in the dying seconds of their matchup and take the win with a narrow edge of 0.09 over Simpson. The Brazilian will skip the elimination round 4 and have a shot at another great result in Cascais when competition recommences.
“It's really tough out there and if you get the wrong wave you're going to pay a lot,” Andre commented. “I went way out the back and was waiting for a set wave because I knew I was needing a solid score. I couldn't believe it when that last one came through, it was such a nice wave. I knew I had to do at least two big turns and the wave was pretty big and clean. I’m so stoked I got that score, it feels great to come back strong.”
Jeremy Flores (FRA) 26, took a crucial round 3 win in his re-qualifying campaign over fellow French Marc Lacomare (FRA) and unpredictable high-flyer Carlos Munoz (CRI). Flores dominated the 35-minute confrontation from the start and sealed the deal on a beautiful righthander, with four consecutive turns and flawless transitions.
“That wave was just perfect ! I paddled into it and saw that it had some wall,” Flores described. “I wasn't sure if it was going to close out, so on the first turn I didn't want to push too hard, but then it kept on running and that was the best wave I’ve got this whole event. Everything is a bonus for me now after that shocker of a year that I've had. I want to make heats and get that confidence back.”
Surfers and event official will reconvene at 7:30am Friday morning for a potential early start of the fourth round of competition. Up first when the event resumes will be the last Portuguese in contention Jose Ferreira (PRT) against Marco Fernandez (BRA).
