Today's call: | Competition called OFF for the day |
Conditions: | 3 - 4 foot (1 metre) |
TAVARUA, Fiji (Tuesday, June 7, 2016) – The Fiji Pro, stop No. 5 of 10 on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, has been called OFF for the day due to lack of swell on offer.
“We are going to call competition off for the day,” said WSL Deputy Commissioner Renato Hickel. “We’ve had a great run so far running in the first two days of the window and getting the first two rounds done, but today there is not much swell on offer. There are only three foot leftover waves at Cloudbreak. We will come back tomorrow to reassess the conditions and make the next call."
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:30 am local time to assess the conditions and make the next call.
With the first two rounds of the event complete, Round 3 will witness close match-ups as the world’s best surfers battle to avoid elimination when competition resumes.
Matt Wilkinson (AUS), current World No. 1 on the Jeep Leaderboard, will go head-to-head against Alejo Muniz (BRA) in Round 3 Heat 12.
Heat 4 will see an intense clash between CT heavyweights Jordy Smith (ZAF) and 11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA). After exemplary Round 1 showings from both competitors, Round 3 Heat 4 will be an all out brawl as Slater will continue his hunt for a fifth win at the Fiji Pro.
Taj Burrow (AUS), 18-year CT veteran, will face John John Florence (HAW) in Round 3 Heat 10. Burrow will fight to continue his run at the final Championship Tour event of his career.
When competition resumes, up first will be former event winner and 2014 WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) against Matt Banting (AUS) in the opening heat of Round 3.
The Surfline forecast is calling for:
SW swell will trend down on Tuesday to smaller leftovers. We’ll see a modest, new bump of SW swell for Wednesday, but we don’t expect much size. Thur/Fri look small, with a fun size SW swell expected for the weekend (although local wind looks a little dicey). The second half of the waiting period continues to show more promise, with new swells possible both early (Tue-Wed) and late (~Fri) next week
The Fiji Pro will be webcast LIVE on WorldSurfLeague.com as well as the WSL app.
The event is also being carried by the WSL’s LIVE broadcast partners Fox Sports Australia, CBS Sports in the United States, ESPN Brasil, Globosat, Edgesport, Sky NZ, Sport TV, Canal + Deportes, Channel Nine, MCS, Starhub, and Oceanic Time Warner Cable 250 & 1250 in Hawaii.

Location: | Tavarua, Fiji |
Event window: | June 5 - 17, 2016 |
Today's call: | Men's Round 2 complete |
Conditions: | 4 - 6 foot (1 - 2 metre) |
TAVARUA, Fiji (Monday, June 6, 2016) – The Fiji Pro, stop No. 5 of 11 on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, witnessed heated head-to-head match-ups as the world’s best surfers fought through elimination Round 2 in four-to-six foot (1 - 2 metre) waves at Cloudbreak.
Matt Wilkinson (AUS), current Jeep Ratings’ Leader, eliminated 2016 WSL Rookie Alex Ribeiro (BRA) in a close Round 2 match-up. Ribeiro was quick to get points on the board and maintained the lead for a majority of the heat. With ten minutes left on the clock, Wilkinson answered with two back-to-back 6-point rides to take control away from the rookie. As the clock wound down Ribeiro made one last attempt but was not able to secure the 7.43 required to advance. Wilkinson will face Alejo Muniz (BRA) in Round 3 when competition resumes.
“It was a super slow heat,” Wilkinson said. “I went out and thought that it was time for a set, but there was not anything for about fifteen minutes. Alex started with a few mid-range scores, which should not be too scary out there, but I was starting to think that it was never going to break. I started to get worried and went on a few silly waves. The waves then turned on and I think we were out of rhythm because of the slow start, but I put two average scores up and made it through.”
CT veteran Taj Burrow (AUS) will continue his hunt for a big result in Fiji as he dispatched 2016 WSL Rookie Caio Ibelli (BRA) in Heat 7. Although Burrow got a jump-start on Ibelli with a solid 7.27 on his opening exchange, Ibelli continued to chip away with 6-point rides. A set out the back gave Burrow an opportunity to take the lead with only ten minutes left in the heat. Burrow unleashed a critical two-turn combination to earn an excellent 8.03. Ibelli gave one last attempt at the buzzer, but was not able to get to his feet in time. The rookie’s 13.03 heat score fell short of the veteran’s 15.30 and the Brazilian goes home in 25th place.
“I am feeling pretty good, but I have to admit that I was super nervous,” said Burrow. “Going out at this event is a fairytale ending for me regardless of the result, but I was really scared to get last. My nerves are getting to me a bit because I feel extra eyes on me to see how it unfolds. It is a dream result regardless of the actual contest result because I am on my favorite island with my extended family and friends. I could not be happier. It is a great way to go out no matter how the finish is.”
Injury replacement and former CT competitor Dusty Payne (HAW) locked in the highest single-wave score of the day, an excellent 9.33, in his Round 2 match-up against Nat Young (USA). A 16.50 heat total earned the win for Payne and sent Young home in equal 25th place, his worst result of 2016 so far.
“I’m stoked I’m actually putting heats together,” Payne said. “I think it’s because I’m not on tour and there’s no pressure. I’m just having fun and enjoying it a lot more than I was when I was on tour full time - I’d get too nervous and couldn’t surf. I want to let my surfing do the talking. To surf sick waves like Cloudbreak is pretty special.”
Mick Fanning (AUS), three-time WSL Champion, will advance to Round 3 after winning his heat against compatriot Kai Otton (AUS). Fanning showcased his strong backhand with an excellent 8.17 score on his opening wave but trailed Otton for a majority of the heat in need of a second score. Fanning landed a critical snap in the pocket to earn a solid 7.93 to secure a 16.10 heat score and the advantage. Otton, who was in need of an excellent-range score, fought back with multiple attempts and delivered a 7.50. It was not enough to fend off Fanning, and Otton is eliminated from the competition.
“It is hard surfing against one of your good friends,” Fanning said. “Kai and I have been staying in the same room together and that is our third heat in a row here that we’ve had together. You want to go out there and respect each other and let the surfing do the talking, which is how it went in the end. It is hard to lose a mate. It is definitely a different feeling taking time off. At the moment I am feeling pretty light and carefree when it comes to putting on the jersey. As time goes on I’ll find out what is next. I still have some more trips to do and places to go, and hopefully I will come up with a decision soon.”
2016 rookie, Kanoa Igarashi (USA) eliminated current No. 4 on the Jeep Leaderboard Sebastian Zietz (HAW) following their Round 2 clash. Igarashi kept busy throughout the heat, posting 11 scores, to earn a 13.17 heat total and the win. Today’s result, equal 25th place, is the worst of the year for Zietz.
“I came to Fiji early during a good swell and I think that helped me out a bunch,” Igarashi said. “I got to learn the reef and surf some of the best waves of my life. I think that experience is definitely helping me out here now. Seabass [Sebastian Zietz] is a good friend of mine and we both have Tommy Whitaker as a coach. That was one of the first heats I’ve ever had with Seabass and he is one of my favorite surfers, so I am stoked to win that one.”
“It finally felt like I did a good turn after feeling like I was struggling throughout the heat,” Zietz said. “But that last wave went flat, so there was nothing I could really do on that. I showed up a day before the contest started, so I felt like I did not get to get my feet in the wax in this competition. Kanoa is a great surfer and it has been cool getting to know him. My focus now is on J-Bay. I want to get there early and get the feet in the wax. I will hopefully have a good result there.”
The final match-up of Round 2 saw Conner Coffin (USA) and Davey Cathels (AUS) battle for an opportunity to stay in the competition. Both rookies went wave for wave, but it was the Californian who closed the heat out with a 13.17 heat score over Cathels' 10.16.
Igarashi and Coffin are the last 2016 WSL Rookies left in the draw after surviving their Round 2 heats against Zietz and Cathels, respectively. The rookies will continue their hunt for a big result in Fiji.
2015 event runner-up Julian Wilson (AUS) was narrowly eliminated by Alejo Muniz (BRA) in Round 2 of the event. The pair traded mid-range scores, but Muniz pulled out a solid 7.67 to edge out Wilson by 2.83 points. Wilson will walk away with a 25th place finish, his third of the 2016 season.
“Julian is an amazing surfer and one of my favorites,” said Muniz. “Julian is a good friend of mine and he made the final last year. I knew it was going to be a hard heat, so I just tried to focus on myself and try to do my best. A month ago I was really happy to be in the water and now my focus is different as I want to make heats.”
Italo Ferreira (BRA), current No. 2 on the Jeep Leaderboard, eliminated local favorite Tevita Gukilau (FJI) in the opening heat of Round 2. Ferreira dropped the first score in the heat with a 4.50 and captured a 6.17 under Gukilau’s priority. Gukilau, who gained entry into the event by winning the Trails, was not able to find the waves to defeat Ferreira.
“This heat was so hard,” Ferreira said. “I got the first set of the heat, but I fell in the tube. This morning was so good, but now it is a bit slower and more challenging. Last year was a good result here and this year I hope to be better. I am just enjoying getting good waves and good barrels.”
Gabriel Medina (BRA), 2014 event winner, blazed through Heat 3 with one of the day's top scores, a strong 15.94, against rookie Ryan Callinan (AUS). Medina pulled off a variety of impressive maneuvers to capture the win against the Australian.
“That was a tough heat against Ryan,” said Medina. “Ryan has been surfing really well and I knew it would be challenging one. Luckily I got that 8.17 and I am stoked to make it through. Hopefully I can get more waves in Round 3.”
When competition resumes, up first will be Medina against Matt Banting (AUS) in the opening heat of Round 3.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 6:30am local time for a possible 7am start.

Location: | Tavarua, Fiji |
Event window: | June 5 - 17, 2016 |
Today's call: | Men's Round 1 complete |
Conditions: | 4 - 6 foot (1 - 2 metre) |
TAVARUA, Fiji (Sunday, June 5, 2016) – The Fiji Pro, stop No. 5 of 11 on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, commenced today and the world’s best surfers took to the water in Round 1 of the competition at Cloudbreak. The WSL Top 34 battled in building four-to-six foot (1 - 2 metre) waves to earn a direct advance to Round 3 and avoid elimination Round 2.
Jordy Smith (ZAF), one of the day’s top performers, took a decisive win over opponents Taj Burrow (AUS) and Adrian Buchan (AUS) with the highest two-wave heat total of the day (16.67). Smith took advantage of the improving conditions and unleashed two power turns that netted him an excellent 9-point ride and the lead. Burrow was left in a combination situation and out of the race while Buchan trailed 1.23 points behind Smith. Buchan found an opportunity on his final wave but wasn’t able to stay on his feet and will join Burrow in Round 2, despite his strong performance.
“The waves are flipping cooking and it’s going bonkers right now,” said Smith. “I’ve been waiting all year for conditions like this. It started pumping right when I paddled out and everyone was having opportunities. I feel comfortable when you get a lot of chances and that’s really happening today, it’s on! Every single person out here is loving it here and we’ve the got the people of Fiji to thank for that.”
11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA) faced Kolohe Andino (USA) and current No. 4 on the Jeep Leaderboard, Sebastian Zietz (HAW), in the final heat of the day. Slater, four-time Fiji Pro winner, found the day’s top single-wave score, an excellent 9.03, on his fifth wave for a solid 16.13 heat total and the advantage. Zietz was left in need of two big scores to find his way back into the heat while Andino was searching for a 7.74 as the clock wound down. Despite a last-minute attempt from Andino, Slater clinched his first Round 1 win since Portugal in 2015 and the direct advance to Round 2.
“It felt good to win a heat,” said Slater. “I didn’t see Kolohe’s wave but I knew I would have to hammer the lip on a few waves, and then I got that good one. It felt nice to be behind and come back and grab the lead - my year starts now really. I know the reef real well here and the intricacies and the things that play into it. Last year I just couldn’t figure it out so we’ll see what happens this year.”
Following a brief absence from the world stage, three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) returned to competition today and faced Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) and Kai Otton (AUS) in Heat 8. Dantas showed variety and power, opening up with a score in the excellent range to claim the Round 1 win, sending his Australian opponents to elimination Round 2.
“It’s quite hard out there, you have to really choose the good ones,” Dantas said. “I just tried to make big turns with some power. I’m just having fun and enjoying myself. It’s my fourth time here in Fiji and I just love this place as a goofy - it’s the best place ever.”
Keanu Asing (HAW) secured his first heat win of the 2016 season by taking down current Jeep Ratings’ Leader Matt Wilkinson (AUS) and CT veteran Josh Kerr (AUS) in Round 1 Heat 4. With multiple lead changes through the heat, the three surfers battled wave for wave to gain control. Wilkinson was in first place with three minutes remaining but Asing pulled through a deep barrel to earn a 7.07 and capture the top spot over the current World No. 1. Both Wilkinson and Kerr were given one last opportunity in the final minute, but could not close the gap on the Hawaiian.
“I just tried to surf as best as I could and I got the score,” said Asing. “I am pretty stoked. This is the first heat I’ve made all year. I’ve felt like I’ve been right there and I’ve been performing well, but I just haven’t really put together the heat I wanted to. I am trying to find my rhythm this year and hopefully make more heats.”
Adriano de Souza (BRA), reigning WSL Champion, took down event wildcard and local favorite Tevita Gukilau (FJI) and 2016 WSL Rookie Kanoa Igarashi (USA) in Round 1 Heat 6. Gukilau, who earned his place by winning the event trails, charged against the defending World Champion, but could not close the 3.56-point gap needed to advance to Round 3. Gukilau and Igarashi will be sent to elimination Round 2, where they will compete again to avoid early elimination from the event.
“For me it is such a pleasure to be back in Fiji,” De Souza said. “I am trying to enjoy being here and surf the best that I can. I was so nervous during that heat because there were not many opportunities. At the start I made a lot of mistakes, but remembered to take the pressure off of myself and just try to do my best. After that I started to improve and get the momentum. I am happy to make that heat against Tevita and Kanoa because they surfed so well.”
An all-Brazilian, all-goofy-footer match-up in Round 1 Heat 5 saw an intense clash between Miguel Pupo (BRA), 2015 WSL Rookie of the Year Italo Ferreira (BRA) and 2016 Rookie Alex Ribeiro (BRA). Ferreira set the tone with a solid 7.50 opening ride, but lost the advantage to Pupo. Ferreira answered back and unleashed massive carves to lock in a 7.60 and take back the lead. Needing an 8.10, Pupo got to his feet with less than a second before the final buzzer and was awarded an excellent 8.23 to defeat Ferreira and take the win. Pupo will advance to Round 3, while Ferreira and Ribeiro will surf again in Round 2.
“I made a couple of mistakes in the heat, but my board felt good,” Pupo said. “At the last second I had to believe. I knew I had to make the drop and soon as I dropped the wave caught me and I had to adjust. There was a lot of foam so it was hard to see, but right as I came out I saw an opportunity to do a turn. You never know if you are going to get the score, but you have to give your best. I am feeling healthy and happy and glad to make this heat.”
John John Florence (HAW) fought through the opening heat of Round 1 and defeated Alejo Muniz (BRA) and rookie Davey Cathels (AUS). The close heat saw Florence edge out Muniz by only 1.00 point and Cathels by only 1.73 points. Florence will advance to Round 3, while Muniz and Cathels are sent to Round 2.
“Always pumped to come back to Fiji and compete,” Florence said. “You sometimes feel like a guinea pig having the first heat of the contest and there was a lot of water on the reef for us so it wasn’t classic Cloudbreak conditions. Davey (Cathels) and Alejo (Muniz) are super deadly on their backhands so it really came down to making the most of my opportunities. Stoked to be into Round 3.”
Jadson Andre (BRA) stormed into the lead with a 14.60 heat total against Gabriel Medina (BRA), 2014 WSL Champion and former event winner, and injury replacement Stuart Kennedy (AUS) in Round 1 Heat 3. Kennedy found a 5.17 and a 7.50, but could not secure the 7.10 score needed to defeat Andre. Medina stayed the most active throughout the heat by attempting many progressive maneuvers, but could not break through the 6-point range and will surf again in Round 2.
“That was a great heat for me,” Andre said. “As everyone knows, I had a slow start to the year because of my ankle injury taking me out of Western Australia and I probably should not have surfed at Rio, but I wanted to surf in front of my family and the Brazilian crowd. I got worse after Rio, so I have been working to get back in form with my team and doctors. It is great to say that I am not one-hundred percent yet because I just had my best heat of the year. I feel great and it is amazing to be back in Fiji.”
Jeremy Flores (FRA), 2015 Fiji Pro Semifinalist, sailed through his opening heat against Nat Young (USA), former Fiji Pro runner-up, and replacement surfer Dusty Payne (HAW). Flores’ solid turns earned him the direct advance to Round 3 with a 12.67 heat score.
“It feels great to get back to a proper reefbreak on tour,” Flores said. “I feel like I have been surfing well this year and the results have still been hard to come by. I’m probably strongest in reef breaks, having grown up on Reunion Island, and I think this is an opportunity to put in a solid result.”
When competition recommences, up first will be Italo Ferreira (BRA) against Tevita Gukilau (FJI) in the opening heat of the elimination Round 2.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 6:30am local time for a possible 7am start.
The Surfline forecast is calling for:
Fun to mid size SW swell mix builds Sunday before slowly easing through Monday. At this point the surf looks fairly small for the 7th-10th with a couple of modest pulses of SW swell during that time, but with periods of onshore flow also expected for the middle to second half of the week. The last few days of the waiting period continue to hold better potential for larger surf, although we remain lower confidence on any specifics this far out.
