BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Wednesday, December 9, 2015) - Jack Robinson (AUS), 17, claimed the Pipe Invitational this afternoon, besting a specialist field of 32 to take the prestigious win and advance, alongside Runner-up and former Pipe Master, Jamie O’Brien (HAW), into the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons.
The final event of the 2015 Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the Billabong Pipe Masters In Memory of Andy Irons is a highly-competitive event that pits some of the world’s best surfers against one of the world’s most renowned waves.
Solid 10-to-15 foot (3 - 5 metre) surf steamed through the world-famous Banzai Pipeline all day, providing the backdrop for incredible barrels and horrendous wipeouts by some of the best Pipeline surfers on the planet.
In the end, it was 17-year-old phenom, Robinson, that came away with the win - turning in one excellent score of a 9.43 to claim the victory over O’Brien, Mason Ho (HAW) and Kekoa Cazimero (HAW). Leading the front of youthful standouts including Griffin Colapinto (USA), Kalani David (HAW), and Luke Shepardson (HAW), Robinson was in-form, collecting impressive scores throughout the event, winning each of his four heats, and has his eyes now set on the main event.
“I just wanted to get the best waves and go against the best guys but the trials were so gnarly,” Robinson said. “Any one of the trialists could take down a CT guy so I’m just stoked to get a few waves against them. It was great to have my dad here and I had a lot of fun - just wanted to go and get it done. I’d be stoked to get a couple of drainers, that’s what it’s all about here and it’d be great to get into a few heats.”
Robinson won the Vans Triple Crown Rookie of the Year award at Sunset last week during the Vans World Cup of Surfing and has had a phenomenal performance in Hawaii this season. With a fourth place finish in the HIC Pro, the official Vans Triple Crown qualifying event, the young Australian has quickly become a fan favorite.
Wade Carmichael (AUS), winner of the Hawaiian Pro, leads the Vans Triple Crown ratings ahead of defending WSL World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA), Dusty Payne (HAW), Mick Fanning (AUS) and John John Florence (HAW) respectively. Carmichael will surf against Medina and Keanu Asing (HAW) once the Billabong Pipe Masters commences.
Claiming Runner-up, 2004 Pipe Master and local charger Jamie O’Brien (HAW) punched his ticket into this year’s main event after a near-miss last year. Known for his fearless approach to one of the heaviest waves in the world, O’Brien will now have a chance to show his prowess against the world’s best.
“I narrowly missed out last year coming in third so I made it a goal here to get second and I’m excited with the forecast looking really good,” O’Brien said. “I’m really stoked with everyone that came down today in support of the trials and excited we got to put on a good event in some unruly conditions at times. I think today was the hard day coming into a lot of good heats. Guys were surfing great and every heat was like a Final. The best thing about the main event is we’re only surfing one or two heats a day and that’ll give us time to relax - whereas today we had to surf four times and that’s really draining so I’m excited to make the main event.”
Turning heads during his Pipe Invitational run, local young gun Luke Shepardson (HAW), 20, posted the event’s only perfect 10 in Heat 8 of Round 1, but couldn’t find the scores needed to advance from the Quarterfinals. Finding a pristine Pipeline bomb, Shepardson locked into the barrel with equipment made for these conditions - beating multiple sections and finding a clean exit.
"I knew it was a really, really good wave," said Luke Shepardson. "And I thought it's either a 10 or a 1. I was super stoked I made it. I'm riding a 6'10, I was thinking I would ride my 6'8, but I think the 6'10 helped a lot. As I bottom turned into it there was a warble in the wave and the board almost skidded out - the couple extra inches held the rail and helped me get out of it. I think that was my best wave ever at Pipe. It's the best feeling I ever got, especially because it's in a contest and the whole world is watching."
Three-time WSL Champion and current Jeep Rankings’ Leader Mick Fanning (AUS), Filipe Toledo (BRA), Adriano de Souza (BRA), reigning WSL Champion Medina, Owen Wright (AUS) and defending Pipe Master Julian Wilson (AUS) are all in the running for the 2015 WSL Title, which will be decided at the final stop of the 2015 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, the Billabong Pipe Masters.
A full list of scenarios for the 2015 WSL Title bout can be found online HERE
Fredrick Patacchia (HAW) and Matt Banting (AUS) have withdrawn from the event. They’ve been replaced by former Pipe Master Bruce Irons (HAW) and current Vans Triple Crown ratings’ leader Carmichael in the main event.
Irons has drawn Fanning and compatriot Sebastian Zietz (HAW) while Carmichael will take on Medina and Hawaiian rookie Keanu Asing (HAW) in Round 1 of competition.
Organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:00am to reassess conditions.
Surfline, Official Forecasters for the World Surf League, are calling for:
Large WNW swell peaks early Wednesday morning, with Pipe expected to be mainly maxed out. However, watch for the surf to gradually become more tame through the day, especially over the afternoon. The swell eases a couple notches for Thursday (but still solid) and shifts more NW’erly in angle. The swell continues to ease over Friday and the weekend. Breezy ENE veering East Trades through Wed/Thurs, then backing off some over Friday and veering ESE. Watching for a possible good size NW swell for around the 15th-17th.
The Billabong Pipe Masters will be webcast LIVE on WorldSurfLeague.com and on the WSL app.
The world's best surfing will also be broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports in Australia, MCS Extreme in France, EDGE Sports in China, South Korea, Malaysia and other territories and on Globo TV in Brazil.

BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Tuesday, December 8, 2015) - A special press conference was held this morning with all six contenders vying for the WSL Title discussing one of the most dramatic Title races in history.
Current WSL Jeep Rankings’ Leader Mick Fanning (AUS), Filipe Toledo (BRA), Adriano De Souza (BRA), reigning WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA), Owen Wright (AUS) and defending Pipe Master Julian Wilson (AUS) discussed their respective seasons, opportunities missed and ambitions to claim the prestigious title.
Coming into the final CT event of the year, the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, Mick Fanning (AUS) had the opportunity to claim the 2015 World Title at the Rip Curl Moche Pro in Portugal. However, losing in Round 3 to local wildcard sensation Frederico Morais (PRT), it wasn’t to be and Fanning is now locked into the heaviest title fight of his career.
“In France I just felt like I was starting heats slow so in Portugal I tried to fix that and just made one quick mistake and that was it,” Fanning said. “I knew at the start of the year who was going to be a the title race and that it was going to be a close one. The level on tour is just incredible. You can’t sit there and walk into Quarterfinals these days – there’s so many ups and downs. I’ve never been in a race with so many people and there’s so many eyes to watch so it’s exciting.”
The dangers of this infamous wave were witnessed in shocking fashion on Sunday as Qualifying Series (QS) competitor Evan Geiselman (USA) nearly drowned, something that Fanning was on hand for and helped assist South African Andre Botha attempting to save Geiselman. Fanning already encountered a life-threatening situation this year with the terrifying shark attack at Jeffreys Bay and is fortunate to be on the shores of Oahu.
“I consider myself extremely lucky – I was lucky beforehand and now I’m even more lucky to walk away from something like that, there’re other people who haven’t,” Fanning said. “I’m super happy to be here and to have a chance to continue doing what I love. I was just walking down the beach and saw Evan pull into one but didn’t really think about it. . It was extremely fortunate that something bad didn’t become worse. I think we always know it’s dangerous and it’s a fifty-fifty chance. You know you have to put yourself over the ledge and do that to get the best scores. In the same sentence though you just have to have a calculated risk about it.”
No stranger to throwing himself over the ledge at Pipeline, current WSL No. 7 and defending Pipe Master and Vans Triple Crown champion, Julian Wilson (AUS) finds himself in the mix this season with a mathematical chance of winning his first World Title and defending his Triple Crown title.
“I know exactly what I have to do in terms of making a few heats if someone doesn’t,” Wilson said. “For me it’s going out there and winning the event. To still have a shot at it is a special thing and I’m looking forward to giving it everything I have – hopefully take care of what I need to do and get a bit lucky. The Triple Crown isn’t out of the question for me again this year so it’s going to be a really fun event.”
Ushering in the Brazilian Storm that currently dominates the CT, Adriano De Souza (BRA) finds himself sitting at No. 3 and has a strong shot at taking his first-ever World Title. De Souza has set himself up for this moment throughout the year, never dropping out of the Top 3 and holding onto the Jeep Leader yellow jersey for the majority of the season - only to lose the top spot at the Hurley Trestles Pro.
“For the last ten years this has been a dream just to sit here at Pipe and have a chance to win a World Title,” De Souza said. “All through the years I’ve watched the champs from the beach screaming and crying, and thinking someday I’ll be here. It’s really special with three Brazilians and three Aussies as well, it’s going to be very exciting and can’t wait to get started.”
“It was great to start the year off strong but now you have to finish it at the end,” De Souza added. “I’m looking forward to do my best out here and try to grab my first World Title. I know it’s going to be so competitive with a three-time World Champion, last year’s champion Gabriel, and last year’s Pipemaster Julian here. So many things are going to happen with massive barrels and having Filipe as a young guy in the mix, I know he’ll be charging so everyone who’s here deserves it.”
Current World No. 2, Filipe Toledo (BRA), has the best possible chance for thwarting Fanning’s dream achievement of four World Titles - sitting just 200 points behind the Australian. Before 2015, Toledo had never won a CT event let alone been in a title race. Now, the fleet-footed Brazilian has a significant shot at the world surfing crown.
“To be a world title contender is totally different than being in a 20 spot but I feel good,” Toledo said. “It’s been amazing for me with three Finals and three perfect scores throughout the year. I’ve just been having a lot of fun. With this contest there’s just so many guys fighting for a World Title and it’s so amazing to see their level of surfing. I’m really happy to see all these guys fighting with me to win it. Hoping to get some big barrels out here and just wishing the best to everyone.”
Posting a history-making event at the Fiji Pro, WSL No. 5 Owen Wright (AUS) has found the backup finishes to earn a spot into this year’s Title race and is more prepared than ever for the upcoming battle at Pipeline.
“I got the best wave I’ve ever had out here at Pipe two days ago which I’m really stoked on,” Wright said. “I think you can take a carefree approach and at the same time you still have the goal, you still have the vision and when those losses come in the early rounds – you just have to learn from them. With the level of talent on this tour there’s not going to be one dominator and I think that’s why there’s six of us standing here now. Coming in as No.5 I know I’ve got some work to do.”
Rounding out the Top 6 fighting for this year’s prestigious WSL Title trophy, No. 4 Gabriel Medina (BRA) finds himself back in the ultimate arena to defend his crown. However, it’s a significantly different scenario this time around.
“I’ve been training since the beginning of the year and I don’t know what really happened at those first few events – it’s the life we have,” Medina said. “You will have your lows and some you’re going to win. I was training and surfing everyday then something just clicked after Jeffery’s Bay – I started getting results and I feel good in my surfing as a whole. Last year I had a lot of pressure because I was leading and everyone was talking about it – being the first Brazilian World Champ and just felt the pressure but this year I don’t feel it at all.”

BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Monday, December 7, 2015) - The 2015 World Surf League (WSL) Samsung Galaxy Men’s Championship Tour (CT) Title Race has come down to the final event of the year, the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, held from December 8 - 20, 2015. With six men currently in the hunt, WSL No.1 Mick Fanning (AUS), No.2 Filipe Toledo (BRA), No.3 Adriano De Souza (BRA), No.4 reigning WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA), No.5 Owen Wright (AUS) and defending Pipe Masters winner No.6 Julian Wilson (AUS), all have a shot at this year’s world surfing crown. Fanning is coming into Pipeline with significant momentum after winning the Vans World Cup of Surfing in substantial conditions at Sunset Beach. Already with three World Titles to his name, Fanning is looking to achieve a historical moment in his career with another WSL Title. “It’s been an up and down sort of year,” Fanning said. “I feel like in France I was just hanging on and now I just want to go and throw everything at it. It’s no use playing tactics anymore, it’s just go out and do your job. I want to do my best and to match Mark Richards with four titles would be a dream come true.” Clinching the No.1 spot at Margaret River and holding onto the Jeep Leader yellow jersey until Trestles when he fell behind to Fanning, Adriano De Souza (BRA) has had one of his best performances on the Dream Tour this season. However, the Brazilian will need a result at Pipeline if he is to clinch his first World Title. “It’s been an amazing experience for me to be in the Top 3 since the first event,” De Souza said. “This has always been a dream of mine, being on tour for ten years now, and I’m ready to win a title. Coming down to the last event of the year is also a dream to fight for a title here.” Defending Billabong Pipe Master champion and Vans Triple Crown winner, Julian Wilson (AUS) is currently sitting at No.7 with a mathematical chance to claim his first-ever World Title. Beginning his year with a Runner-Up at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and following it up with Runner-Up finishes at Fiji Pro and Jeffreys Bay later in the year, Wilson has turned in a much better result sheet than 2014. “I look at the position I'm in at the end of this season as opposed to last and I carried that momentum from Hawaii last year through this year,” Wilson said. “There's obviously a lot of factors coming in, a lot of things have to fall my way to win the Title as well as win Pipe, but if I can go to Pipe and get another result like last year, I'm going to be proud of whatever position that leaves me in. It's been a much better year.” A full list of scenarios for the 2015 WSL Title bout can be found online HERE
In addition to the hunt for the 2015 WSL Title, the world’s best surfers are also vying for a position on next year’s tour - finishing Top 22 on the CT rankings, Top 10 on the Qualifying Series (QS) rankings or receiving one of two WSL wildcards which comprise the WSL Top 34. Fredrick Patacchia (HAW) and Matt Banting (AUS) have withdrawn from the event. They’ve been replaced by former Pipe Master Bruce Irons (HAW) and current Vans Triple Crown ratings’ leader Wade Carmichael (AUS) in the main event. The Pipe Trials, a $100,000, 32-man event, will determine the final two spots for this year’s Billabong Pipe Masters will a strong likelihood of running tomorrow. Surfline, Official Forecasters for the World Surf League, are calling for: Over the past few days, a strong storm developed off Japan and tracked toward the Aleutian Islands, boasting a captured fetch that pushed straight at Hawaii with wind speeds up to 35-45kts+. As a result, another XXL size WNW swell (295-315°) will slam into Hawaii over the next few days. This pulse is looking to be similar in size to the NW swell that showed this past weekend, but more westerly in angle. This swell will rapidly build over Tuesday the 8th (mainly over the PM hours), peak over Tuesday night, then holding strong into early Wednesday morning the 9th. Pipe Trials Round 1 Match-Ups: Heat 1: Jack Freestone (AUS), Sunny Garcia (HAW), Griffin Colapinto (USA), Nathan Fletcher (USA) Heat 2: Mason Ho (HAW), Dane Reynolds (USA), Gavin Gillette (HAW), Makai McNamara (HAW) Heat 3: Ian Walsh (HAW), Joel Centeio (HAW), Kaimana Jaquias (HAW), Mikey Bruneau (HAW) Heat 4: Jack Robinson (AUS), Kalani David (HAW), Hank Gaskell (HAW), Isaiah Moniz (HAW) Heat 5: Ezekiel Lau (HAW), Seth Moniz (HAW), Alex Smith (HAW), Nathan Florence (HAW) Heat 6: Josh Moniz (HAW), Kiron Jabour (HAW), Jamie O’Brien (HAW), Myles Padaca (HAW) Heat 7: Granger Larsen (HAW), Kaito Kino (HAW), Kekoa Cazimero (HAW), Evan Valiere (HAW) Heat 8: Tanner Hendrickson (HAW), Billy Kemper (HAW), Olamana Eleogram (HAW), Luke Shepardson (HAW) Billabong Pipe Masters Round 1 Match-Ups: Heat 1: Italo Ferreira (BRA), Adrian Buchan (AUS), Glenn Hall (IRL) Heat 2: Owen Wright (AUS), Jadson Andre (BRA), Dusty Payne (HAW) Heat 3: Gabriel Medina (BRA), Keanu Asing (HAW), TBD Heat 4: Adriano de Souza (BRA), Michel Bourez (PYF), TBD Heat 5: Filipe Toledo (BRA), Kolohe Andino (USA), TBD Heat 6: Mick Fanning (AUS), Sebastian Zietz (HAW), TBD Heat 7: Julian Wilson (AUS), Kai Otton (AUS), Ricardo Christie (NZL) Heat 8: Jeremy Flores (FRA), Matt Wilkinson (AUS), Jordy Smith (ZAF) Heat 9: Kelly Slater (USA), Taj Burrow (AUS), C.J. Wanning, Hainan Island/CHINA (Wednesday, December 9, 2015) Peru’s Piccolo Clemente (PER) has been crowned the 2015 Jeep Longboard World Champion. Clemente came up against 2 times World Champion Taylor Jensen (USA) in what were the best conditions of the waiting period with 4-5 foot waves and offshore winds at Riyue Bay Wanning, Hainan, China. “I feel incredible,” Clemente said. “After getting knocked out early in the competition last year I was frustrated so I have been working so hard all year for this event and the result shows. The waves were incredible all day which was perfect.” 2013 World Champion Clemente took the lead mid way through the heat with back-to-back excellent scores giving him a heat total of 18.30 (out of a possible 20). Needing a score, Jensen got busy in the last 10 minuses of the heat but fell just short of the required score finishing the Final on 17.70, gifting the Peruvian his second World Title. “Taylor and I met in an event in Japan earlier this year and he beat me so to get one back on him is great. Taylor is an incredible competitor I have a lot of respect for him so I’m really happy to win against him here in China." Jensen was looking ominous all event even posting two excellent scores during the Final. The American was unable to match the high scores of Clemente a suffered his first ever runner-up. “It’s really tough,” Jensen said. This is the first time I’ve had a second and it’s worse than getting ninth. Piccolo has been ripping so it was always going to be tough. The waves for the entire event have been great, but the second really hurts.” On his way to the final, Jensen came up against past event runner-up Rodrigo Sphaier (BRA). Sphaier came out of the gates early putting up a solid heat total of 18.14. Jensen waited patiently, which payed off, only just winning the heat with a total of 18.24. Sphaier will now begin his preparation for next years World Championship. “I feel like I surfed really well,” Sphaier said. “I tried my hardest all contest. Taylor is so good so it was always going to be difficult against him. The waves are the best they have been today and I really love this point, I hope I can do even better next year.” Earlier in the day, Clemente met Ben Skinner (GBR) in the second Semifinal. After posting the second 10.00-point ride of the contest earlier in the day, Skinner was unable to find a rhythm and finished equal 3rd at the World Championships. “This is the highest I’ve ever finished at this event,” Skinner said. “I’m stoked with my performance and this result, it’s much closer to where I want to be. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be Longboard World Champion and today I got pretty close to that. I’ve had a great time here in China, the waves have been pumping the whole event.” For all news, photos and highlights from the 2015 Jeep World Longboard Championship, head to www.worldsurfleague.com or the WSL App. |
