CASCAIS, Portugal (Saturday, September 26, 2015) - Stop No. 8 on the 2015 Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), the Cascais Women’s Pro, completed Rounds 3, 4 and the Quarterfinals today in solid four-to-six foot (1.5 - 2 metre) waves at Guincho. With variable wind conditions throughout the day, the famed Portuguese beachbreak saw moments of perfection today and played host to high drama as the WSL Title Race and battle for requalification saw some major shakeups.
Lakey Peterson (USA) was the first to secure her place in the Semifinals of the Cascais Women’s Pro. She defeated Alessa Quizon (HAW) in a low-scoring affair and will move on to face Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW) to fight for her first Final appearance of the year. The result marks the third Semifinal berth for Peterson this season, who is currently in fifth place on the Jeep Leaderboard, and Quizon’s best result of 2015.
“It’s really hard out there and it’s a big test for us, which is great,” said Peterson. “You have to be really patient and not freak out. You need to search for the waves that’s how you win. Alessa’s been surfing amazing so I really feel for her, but I’m so happy to make it through.”
Peterson caused the day’s major upset in Round 4 by eliminating 2X WSL Champion Carissa Moore (HAW). Peterson took control from the outset and left the current Jeep Leaderboard front-runner trailing.
An all-Hawaiian clash played out in Quarterfinal No. 2 as Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW) battled Malia Manuel (HAW). After a slow start it was the rookie that built her scoreline with a heat-high 7.00. Weston-Webb took the win to make her second Semifinal of the season where she will match-up against Peterson.
“That was probably the hardest heat I’ve ever surfed in my life,” said Weston-Webb. “I’m super stoked to take the win in such tough conditions and be back in the Semifinals. Lakey’s a great competitor and I’m looking forward to facing her.”
Earlier in the day Manuel dispatched World No. 4 Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) in a high-scoring Round 4 match-up. Manuel had Buitendag on the ropes for most of the heat. One big score from the South African, an 8.83, put her back in contention but Manuel found a wave in the final moments to regain her lead and take the win.
A strong start from Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) in her Quarterfinal clash against World No. 2 Courtney Conlogue (USA) saw her net a 15.17 heat total to leave her opponent in a combination situation. Conlogue found an excellent 8.23 of her own to break the combination and put herself back in the heat. In the final minutes Conlogue put together a series of major maneuvers and was rewarded with a near-perfect 9.67, the highest score of the competition so far, to take her place in the Semifinals with a 17.90 two-wave heat total. The win takes Conlogue one step closer to her first World Title and a Finals berth in Portugal will see her reclaim the Jeep Leader Jersey.
“I actually didn’t even know that I was comboed,” said Conlogue. “Surprisingly I had fun out there once I found my rhythm. I’ve been having a tough morning but I’m really happy to make it through to the Semifinals.”
The last heat of the day saw Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) face Johanne Defay (REU), each battling for their place in the Semifinals. Defay was out in front with half the heat gone, but Fitzgibbons held the highest score of the heat. The Australian was able to find a solid back-up, a 7.93, and took the lead, leaving Defay searching for a 9.43.
“What a battle,” said Fitzgibbons. “Out there all the elements are against you and Johanne’s been surfing so good all day, so I was sure she would get two good scores.”
Defay previously got the better of Tyler Wright (AUS) in Round 4, eliminating the Australian with a 16.23 heat total.
“Conditions were so tricky,” said Wright. “It’s such a physical workout -- paddling and duck diving. The girls that are getting through are the ones that are finding the waves. You have to make opportunities where there aren’t too many.”

Location: | Praia de Santa Barbara - Sao Miguel / Azores Islands |
Holding Period: | September 22-27, 2015 |
Call: | Event Completed, Jack Freestone Wins |
Conditions: | 4-6Ft on Day 4 |
PRAIA DE SANTA BARBARA, Sao Miguel - Azores Islands (Friday, September 25, 2015) - Jack Freestone (AUS), 23, has won the SATA Azores Pro over compatriot Dion Atkinson (AUS), 29, in an exciting final disputed in clean four-to-five foot surf at Praia de Santa Barbara.
In the final, Atkinson got active first and belted an excellent 8.67 on a beautiful left with a couple of radical turns. Freestone wasted no time in answering but limited by his choice of wave, could only belt a 7.17 and spent most of the first half of the heat chasing another high score. With 15 minutes on the clock, Freestone found a gem of his own and performed two critical turns for an excellent 8.33 and the heat lead.
The remainder of the heat witnessed an anxious Atkinson paddle into no less than six waves but eventually all his efforts were invested in vain and Freestone claimed the prestigious Azorean title.
“I’m so happy, those last twelve minutes watching Dion getting all the waves, I was so anxious,” an emotional Freestone said. “I’m so psyched, I just can’t believe I won this event, I’ve finally won a QS10,000. It’s really satisfying to get up there on the rankings, it’s a huge weight off my shoulder, and a lot of work has gone into it. I had a really good time in the Azores, staying in the marina it was beautiful there and we always surf the funnest waves so yeah it’s been amazing.”
Atkinson struggled to launched his finals day campaign with a tough opening heat against Adam Melling (AUS) 30, but found his rhythm in the quarters, posting two consecutive massive wins and big scores on the way to the final. Unfortunately the former CT competitor couldn’t maintain his momentum and placed runner-up.
“Today has been so fun, it’s so good that feeling that you get your surfing in the right place and there’s been a lot of waves,” Atkinson said. “Unfortunately I didn’t win but it still feels like there’s a lot of positive to come out of it. Obviously my goal is to get straight back on tour, I had a very slow start of the year, but finally I feel like it’s all behind me and I want to keep doing good surfing. I watched Adam Melling win the Portuguese Waves Series a few years ago and it was fun to see, so fingers crossed I’ll put on a good show in Cascais and we’ll see what happens !”
In the first semifinal, Sebastian Zietz (HAW), 27, didn’t find the excellent righthanders he had scored on all morning and while Atkinson built momentum on the lefts, Zietz stuck to an option that didn’t pay off. Right on the bubble of requalification via the Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour, Zietz collects an important 6,500 ranking points to launch his QS campaign only a few weeks away from the Hawaiian home stretch of Haleiwa and Sunset.
“It was super fun to make a couple of heats,” Zietz said. “It’s good to get some momentum going and hopefully I can keep it up. Waves have been super rippable and some barrels today, looking at the sandbar there were some big opened barrels down there but I decided to surf where my opponent was and tried to outsurf him, but in the end I probably should have gone where the waves were best.”
In the following heat, Miguel Pupo (BRA), 23, was leading with two average scores for most of the heat, before Freestone launched into two successive airs to put Pupo in a combination situation on the 5 minute mark. Pupo, who had earlier found the second perfect 10 point ride of the event with a solid backhand barrel his in quarterfinal matchup against Kolohe Andino (USA), 21, couldn’t find the magic peak and placed equal third.
“I had planned to go surf the little right corner, but I knew Jack was going to sit further down the beach were we saw a couple of good waves before our heat so I didn’t want to give him a chance to be alone and score a perfect barrel,” Pupo said. “I had a good result in Trestles and I’m doing ok on the CT, but I decided to come here with my filmer and come freesurf a lot and do the event at the same time. I was staying with friends here and a super cool crew so we had a great time.”
With his win today, Freestone claims an early lead in the Portuguese Waves Series - Cascais Trophy rankings and will take his act to the upcoming Allianz Billabong Pro Cascais, starting next Monday in mainland Portugal.

Today's call: | Rounds 1 and 2 complete |
Conditions: | Three-to-Four Foot (1 Metre) at Guincho |
CASCAIS, Portugal (Friday, September 25, 2015) - Stop No. 8 on the 2015 Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), the Cascais Women’s Pro, got underway today at the back-up site of Guincho with Rounds 1 and 2 completed in challenging three-to-four foot (1 metre) waves.
The event marks the opening stop on WSL’s European leg and sees the hotly-contested 2015 WSL Title race reignited as well as a battle for requalification for next year’s CT.
This morning’s non-elimination Round 1 saw strong performances from the top three surfers on the Jeep Leaderboard with Carissa Moore (HAW), Courtney Conlogue (USA) and Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) all posting heat wins to advance directly to Round 3.
Moore, wearing the Jeep Leader Jersey, got the better of Silvana Lima (BRA) and local wildcard Teresa Bonvalot (PRT) to sail through Round 1. A 14.83 heat total secured her place in Round 3 and another step closer to securing a third WSL Title.
“The wind has definitely calmed down a bit so there is opportunity out there to do a few turns,” said Moore. “I’m stoked to be surfing today and make it through that Round 1 heat.”
World No. 2, Conlogue, dominated her Round 1 heat against Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) and Pauline Ado (FRA), with a big, committed turn on a huge wave for an 8.00 and a 15.00 two-wave heat total (out of a possible 20). Despite a strong start Van Dijk was sent to elimination Round 2 where where she defeated Coco Ho (HAW) to advance on to Round 3.
“I watched what the judges were rewarding and really went for it as much as I could on one big turn,” said Conlogue. “Conditions are tough out there so you really have to maximize your opportunities.”
Fitzgibbons, who continues to surf with her head wrapped following a perforated ear drum suffered earlier in the season in Fiji, opened strong in her Round 1 bout, scouring the lineup to maximize what scoring opportunities were out there.
“I couldn’t hear anything during that heat because of all the head gear I was wearing but I kept surfing hard even though I didn’t know the scores,” said Fitzgibbons. “I did move down the beach and surfed it as well I could and it paid off.”
Competition continued with Round 2 and saw more impressive performances from the world's best. Top seeds Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), Lakey Peterson (USA), Tyler Wright (AUS) and Johanne Defay (REU) all won their heats to avoid elimination advance on in the event.
Defay posted the highest single-wave score of the day, an 8.50, in her Round 2 match-up against Laura Enever (AUS) to claim the win and secure a spot in Round 3. Enever found herself lost in the difficult lineup and is eliminated in equal 13th place while the current World No. 7 moves on.
“It’s really important to have a friend on tour to help and it’s so good to have Bianca Buitendag to support me,” said Defay. “I don’t know how I pulled off that 8.50 ride. It just came off even though it’s hard to find anything out there. I’m just so glad I made it through.”
Buitendag and Bonvalot battled in Round 2 Heat 3. The goofyfooters went head-to-head, fighting to stay in the contest. Buitendag looked in rhythm and opened strong with a 6.83. She went on to back it up with another 6-point ride to build a 13.00 two-wave heat total. Bonvalot was left chasing an excellent 8.60, couldn’t find the score and is sent home in 13th place from her third CT event.
“I don’t know about the world title but my goal this year is to make the top 5,” said Buitendag. “I’m so happy to make it through Round 2, it’s very nerve-wracking, and that heat was tough and could’ve gone either way.”
Peterson applied the pressure early against injury wildcard Pauline Ado (FRA) and got to work quickly. With half the heat gone Ado was yet to post a score while Peterson had a 10.67 heat total. Ado managed to build a 7.50 heat total of her own but it wasn’t enough and she is eliminated from the competition while Peterson moves on to Round 3.
“It what so hard out there and the ocean was really pulsing,” said Peterson. “I got the first wave of the heat, which definitely helps. It’s really hard to surf out there and I felt like I was paddling for most of the time.”
Wright delivered an impressive display in her Round 2 heat against Sage Erickson (USA). Wright, the current World No. 6, overcame the challenging surf and put Erickson in a combination situation with a 16.10 heat total, the best of the day. Erickson, who is currently leading the WSL Qualifying Series rankings, has secured her place on next year’s elite tour but leaves Portugal in equal 13th place.
“That was really hard work out there,” said Wright. “I am absolutely exhausted after that. There’s so much water moving out there so there isn’t a predictable section, which is what makes it tough. You have to be adaptive and ready to react to what the wave has to offer.”

PRAIA DE SANTA BARBARA, Sao Miguel - Azores Islands (Thursday, September 24, 2015) - After a slow morning at high tide, the SATA Azores Pro resumed early in the afternoon with clean two-to-three foot allowing the third round of competition to be completed at Santa Barbara.
Dion Atkinson (AUS), 29, opened the show in the punchy peaks of Santa Barbara and put on a solid performance, collecting the heat-winning ride in the dying moments of the heat. The former Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour competitor, who’s back on the grind for qualifying points, advanced into the fourth round of competition where he’ll face Adam Melling (AUS) in a man-on-man confrontation for a place in the quarters.
“Obviously everyone’s waiting for tomorrow, but it’s still fun waves and everyone almost would have preferred to surf today than the previous days cause it’s been so tricky,” Atkinson reflected. “That little right ripple is pretty fun, it’s pretty homely to a lot of the guys. The second wave of the set was probably better for me, and I tried to pick that and learn from a few mistakes at the start of the heat. Everyone keep saying offshore for tomorrow and maybe a few barrels, I’ve seen what this beach can do and I’m pretty excited.”
Alex Ribeiro (BRA), 25, fought off current World No.22 Sebastian Zietz (HAW) and Miguel Tudela (PER) in an exciting Round 3 matchup. The three surfers kept trading the heat lead and built their scoreboard all the way into the final moments of the heat. Eventually it was Ribeiro with two high sevens that claimed the win, to take one step closer to a maiden Championship Tour qualification.
“Conditions today were pretty hard at low tide, you never really know which of the left or right are going to work the best in your heat,” Ribeiro commented. “The couple heats before mine were only rights, and during ours the left started working and I got my two big scores on that one. You have to keep an open mind and adapt to the conditions at hand.”
Wigolly Dantas (BRA), 25, scored the day’s highest single scoring ride, an impressive 9.57 out of a possible 10, for a succession of backhand bashes on a clean little right. Dantas controled his heat and was never really at risk, but eventually found another good wave to backup his high score and definitely push his opponents away.
“It’s tough to surf against two other guys, and waves were a bit smaller but still really fun,” Dantas said. “Wave selection is really crucial to find the right waves that will allow two or three turns and good sections. I changed boards for a 5’9 1/2 epoxy and felt really confident on it, they work great.”
Bino Lopes (BRA), 27, dismantled the little lefts on offer on the far western side of the contest area and won a tense three-man matchup where each competitor had a score in the excellent range. Lopes was the most successful at backing up his best wave and relieved his parents’ anxiety, watching all the action from the beach.
“I’m in the good run and have won two events recently in Brazil and feeling super confident,” Lopes admitted. “Conditions fit my surfing perfectly here and I’m happy to advance through a few heats. My parents are here to support me, well they’re always supporting me and watching the webcasts whatever the time, but here they came with me and it’s great to have them around, it’s just more positive energy and I’m stoked to share this with them.”
The next call has been set to 7:30AM on Friday, for a potential final day of competition as event officials expect pumping conditions all-day.
First in the water when the event resumes will be Dion Atkinson (AUS) up against Adam Melling (AUS).
