PRAIA DE SANTA BARBARA, Sao Miguel - Azores Islands (Wednesday, September 23, 2015) - The second day of the QS10,000 SATA Azores Pro unfolded in clean three-to-four foot surf allowing some of the World’s top surfers to perform and drop huge scores in Round 2 of competition.
Brent Dorrington (AUS), 28, collected the day’s highest combined heat total, an incredible 18.86 out of 20 possible, including a near-perfect 9.93 for a clean exited backhand barrel punctuated by a quick floater on the falling lip. The talented Aussie hailing from Coolangatta, had already bagged two excellent 8+ rides and continued to enjoy the conditions, posting another excellent score before the final horn.
“That wave kind of came out of nowhere, my plan was to stick to the right and then that thing popped up,” Dorrington said. “It got pretty deep at the start and I just fit in that floater at the end, I thought I was going to go head over heels but I pulled it off so I was stoked. It was a little bit all-over the place this morning but as soon as my heat came up it really cleaned up and yeah I’m looking forward to the rest of the week for sure.”
Adam Melling (AUS), 30, former winner of the Portuguese Waves Series - Cascais Trophy, posted the first and only perfect 10 point ride of the event so far, on a righthand deep barrel followed by a two-turn combo to finish the wave.
“It’s good to be back here, I had a 10 here I think 3 years ago, and haven’t had another one since,” Melling stated. “That wave was pretty good, paddling into it I felt quite deep and I got through it and got a couple turns so yeah I’m happy with that. Getting good results on the QS would definitely help, I’m getting some heats under the belt and it definitely helps with confidence. I’ve won the Portuguese Waves Series before and would love to win it again.”
Ezekiel Lau (HAW), 21, found similarities at Santa Barbara with his native Pacific atoll and managed to showcase his Hawaiian power in the clean peaks. With three dangerous Brazilian opponents, the young natural-footer stayed extremely patient in the lineup, only opting to ride three waves during the 30-minute matchup, two of which scored above 8 points.
“I feel good, the waves are a lot easier today than yesterday,” Lau reflected. “Today it seems like the banks are pretty good in the corner and the waves are cleaner. I like coming to the Azores, it’s pretty similar to home, a lot of power and beachbreaks so I’m having fun here.”
Evan Geiselman (USA), 22, launched into a clean forehand rotation grabbed all the way and completed the wave with a nice floater to net an impressive 9.67 and take a win in Round 2. The talented Floridian relegated current World No.21 Miguel Pupo (BRA) into second with his last minute heroics and will look to confirm his excellent form when the event resumes.
“I watched Miguel’s two 7s and realized how the judges were scoring, it seemed like they wanted something different cause everyone’s been doing two backside bangers or something,” Geiselman analysed. “On my 9 it felt like a pretty big air and really corked down in the wind. I love doing airs, I love doing the most progressive stuff I can and film it, and I really want to make heats.”
Timothee Bisso (GLP), 18, rounded up the day’s action with a convincing heat win over Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) and Brazilian Thiago Camarao (BRA) and Marco Fernandez (BRA). The junior surfer from Guadeloupe, who won an amateur European event at praia de Santa Barbara last year, found his rhythm and collected two major heat wins in his first QS10,000 appearance.
“I’m making a lot of points here and will surf in the third round tomorrow, so for a first time in a QS10,000 I’m super happy,” Bisso commented. “Conditions were really tough today and not everyone got good waves, but I managed to find two fun lefts and I’m stoked. I came here last year and won the Euro Junior on this very same spot so I feel pretty confident out there.”
Event officials and surfers will reconvene at 9AM on Thursday for a potential restart of competition with the Round of 24.
Up first when the event resumes will be Brent Dorrington (AUS), Caio Ibelli (BRA) and Dion Atkinson (AUS).

CASCAIS, Portugal (Wednesday, September 23, 2015) - Event organizers have been prompted to call a second consecutive lay day with only small surf in the one-to-two foot (0.5 metre) on offer at Stop No. 8 on the 2015 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour (CT), the Cascais Women’s Pro in Portugal.

"It's still really small here at Carcavelos, it's a beautiful calm day but we're not going to run Round 1 today," said WSL Deputy Commissioner, Jessi Miley-Dyer. "We are going to need to move to Guincho at some stage, the challenge there is the wind. We have a lot of swell available there but we'll wait for the win to back-off a little bit before we can move."
When competition commences, up first will be Lakey Peterson (USA), Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW) and Alessa Quizon (HAW) in the opening heat of Round 1.
Surfline, official forecasters for the World Surf League (WSL), are calling for:
A mix of WNW/NW swell and short period NNW windswell is expected Wednesday with the surf biggest for Guincho and small/minimal surf for Carcavelos. Lingering but slowly easing NNW windswell/NW swell mix is due on Thursday, biggest Guincho with minor/minimal surf for Carcavelos. Rising but more NW directed swell due to fill in Friday. Continuing but easing NW swell is on tap for Saturday with smaller residual swell Sunday. This swell will be biggest for Guincho with only minor amounts of swell wrap expected for Carcavelos. Only small/minor windswell/swell is expected for the final day of the waiting period. Tropical Storm Ida is not expected to have any impacts during the waiting period.

PRAIA DE SANTA BARBARA, Sao Miguel - Azores Islands (Tuesday, September 22, 2015) - Stop No.6 of 7 in the European Qualifying Series, the QS10,000 SATA Azores Pro launched in wind-affected three-to-five foot surf at Santa Barbara. Tough conditions cleaned up towards the end of the day and allowed 22 heats of the opening round of competition.
Noe Mar McGonagle (CRI) 19, was the only surfer on Day 1 to crack the 9 point range with a combination of two big turns on his backhand. Having already posted two excellent rides and well in pole position, the young Costa Rican let lose and pushed his turns to the next level.
“I didn’t really know what to expect, the last two months I’ve just took off after the US Open and I’ve been freesurfing and training,” McGonagle said. “So I was a little nervous before my heat, and that was definitely a tough one, so I’m stoked to get those two good scores and move on to round 2. It’s hard to find the right waves, but my friend and travel partner Carlos Munoz sat in the same spot, we kind of worked it out, and it was a succesful choice for both him and I.”
Frederico Morais (PRT), 23, put on a solid display of powersurfing on the wind affected peaks of Santa Barbara. Morais led the Portuguese pack of which Marlon Lipke, Pedro Henrique and Jose Ferreira will be featured when the event resumes.
“It was a really good heat, I had fun !” Morais said. “I found myself in the right spot during the heat and found that wave where I could fit three good turns. I’m not in my best season so far but we’re just halfway through and there are a lot of contests remaining including two in Portugal so I’ll focus on making a few heats here and a few more next week in Cascais.”
World No.12 Wigolly Dantas (BRA) 25, led his opening Azorean matchup for the most part of the 30-minute exchange before powerful Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau overtook him in the final instants. Fresh off an excellent fifth place at the Hurley Pro at Trestles, Dantas looked relaxed and confident in the peaky beachbreak of Santa Barbara and will look to put on another solid performance when the event resumes.
“The CTs are very different from the QS events, but I’ve been having a great time traveling with my brothers, my coach and my girlfriend,” Dantas said. “I’ve been learning a lot at every event and every heat, with the Brazilian on tour we’re all pushing each other and pushing the limits. Coming in here it’s another story, these are very hard events with 100 guys who surf really good, but it’s fun to surf with everyone and keep the training and momentum going.”
Connor O'Leary (AUS), 21, found the gems in a bumpy lineup to collect solid scores and obtain his ticket for Round 2. The Australian stood apart from the crowd in a four-man heat where his opponents were all within a point of each other.
“I was watching the heat before mine with Pedro Henrique and he got a good score on two turns on a right so I decided to stick to the rights,” O’Leary explained. “I think the rights are a bit better, especially on your backhand, maybe a bit steeper and easier to hit. It’s a pretty challenging wave cause it’s so peaky and has got a lot of punch to it, so you can get confused about what to do with it.”
Caio Ibelli (BRA), 21, highest ranked QS surfer at No.6 in this event, opened his campaign with excellent surfing and the according scores, to advance into the second round. Author of two semifinal berths in QS10,000 events this season already, Ibelli is looking strong in the race for the qualifying spots on the Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour next year.
“I was a little worried about my boards cause I was riding different boards when it was really big yesterday,” Ibelli said. “But the first wave I caught was really good and paddling back out I got an even better one so it was fun and I enjoyed the heat. I’ve been coming here for 3 or 4 years, and every time I got to improve something and learn more about the wave. I’ve been training a lot and working on surfboards that make me surf better so I hope I can keep my momentum going and qualify at the end of the year.”
Event officials and surfers will reconvene at 8AM on Wednesday to re-assess conditions and decide if they allow the event restart.
Up first when Round 1 resumes will be Kanoa Igarashi (USA), former event winner Tomas Hermes (BRA), Evan Geiselman (USA) and Thiago Camarao (BRA).

CASCAIS, Portugal (Tuesday, September 22, 2015) - Small surf in the one-to-two foot (0.5 metre) range has prompted event organizers to call a lay day for Stop No. 8 on the 2015 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour (CT), the Cascais Women’s Pro in Portugal, this morning.
The opening stop of the WSL's European leg, the Cascais Women's Pro welcomes a red-hot title fight for the 2015 crown as well as a dramatic race to requalify for next year's elite tour. The event will commence when conditions improve.
"Small surf today and we've called competition off until tomorrow," said WSL Deputy Commissioner, Jessi Miley-Dyer. "We're looking at a somewhat challenging forecast for the primary venue of Carcavelos, but we're fortunate in having a solid backup option in Guincho. We'll be back tomorrow morning to reassess conditions and make another call then."
